Good stuff and an excellent reference guide!

For most of us, job hunting is excruciating under the best of circumstances. But if you heed the advice of Anthony Garone and Ellis Fitch in their latest book, Winning the Job Search: The Hard Truths About Getting Hired, you just might find your job search to be a little less painful. At the very least, you will discover you’re not alone on the journey.

The book has a conversational in tone and is divided into 57 hard truths and misconceptions. Not only is it filled with helpful anecdotes, advice, and commentary from experts, but you also get a male and female (a.k.a. Anthony and Ellis) perspective on the job search. Spoiler alert: Women face additional challenges that range from what to wear (polo shirts and chinos don’t cut it) to dealing with creepy vibes from an interviewer.

I was delighted to learn that Winning the Job Search is written by two self-acknowledged introverts, which makes this functioning introvert feel seen. I found the Misconception #26: Using Introversion as an Excuse to be particularly relevant and helpful. I’m definitely using Anthony’s example of how to answer a question about strengths and weaknesses as an introvert (Misconception #14: You Can’t Prepare for an Interview) as a talking point.

I am happy to have read the book. Having completed recently a successful job process as a candidate, I can see how my applying several of these concepts to my process were what paved the way to my success. I hadn't read the book by then, but now I will recommend it to others.

In my opinion, most of the concepts seem obvious to me, but clearly are less-than-obvious to others. What this book does wonderfully is the systematization of the process. Its methodical approach is crucial for success. It clearly, compellingly, and succinctly takes the reader from point A to B. It is particularly useful, I believe, for people who are first hitting the job market, as well as for people who haven't looked for a job for a long time.

Now, to the downside: I believe that this book cannot guarantee that the person applying these principles will get a great job. But I do believe that understanding the key levers presented in the book will both improve the odds of getting a job as well as provide a great platform to get the right type of job (for both the hiring team and the candidate).
